Shelley Smith Sworn In to the LACERS Board

Shelley I. Smith was re-elected to one of the two active Member seats of the Los Angeles City Employees' Retirement System (LACERS) Board of Administration. She received more than 50% of the votes from the LACERS Board election held on June 11, 2004. On August 10, 2004, she was sworn in to her third term with the LACERS Board by City Clerk J. Michael Carey.

Smith is an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Los Angeles and is President of the Los Angeles City Attorneys Association. She chairs the Los Angeles Deferred Compensation Board (the City's voluntary defined contribution plan) and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Council of Institutional Investors and Treasurer of the Pacific Pension Institute. Smith also serves on the Executive Committee of the Labor & Employment Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

The LACERS Board consists of seven commissioners - four appointed by the Mayor, one elected by retired employees, and two elected by active Members. Each board member serves a five-year term. In addition to attending Board meetings twice per month, each Commissioner serves on at least one committee.

Smith currently serves as President of the LACERS Board and has been an elected trustee of the System for over ten years. LACERS' pension fund has assets over $7.7 billion and administers retirement and retiree health benefits for 26,000 employees and 14,000 retirees.
