Ginger App:

Kaiser Permanente has added Ginger to its portfolio of world-class mental health apps available to members on-demand, at no cost and without a referral. KP members will have access to one-on-one text-based emotional support coaching through Ginger for 90 days, which can be renewed annually with active KP membership.

Emotional support coaching can help members effectively manage stress, work through relationship issues, and more. Emotional support coaching can play an important role in preventing a more serious mental health condition from developing. Evidence suggests that at the pre-clinical level coaching has been shown to drive behavior changes and improvements in participants in 8-12 weeks. 

Ginger, a digital mental healthcare company, will provide text-based emotional support coaching to Kaiser Permanente adult members. Through the Ginger app, members can easily connect with a coach for private one-on-one texting sessions to meet their unique needs.

How can members access ginger?

  • KP members can go to kp.org/coachingapps to register. Or they may be prompted to got directly to one of the market-specific pages, which are located with the following URLs:  
  • Members will follow a few simple steps to register for 90-day access to the Ginger app.  Members will register with Ginger via kp.org and then continue through the registration process through Ginger. (This is similar to how members register for Calm and myStrength.)
  • Ginger coaches are available anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. 
  • Members will get a 90-day subscription to Ginger on an annual basis. During the 90-day subscription, members can connect with a Ginger coach as often as they want and for as long as they want. Once their 90-day subscription ends, members will no longer be able to access text-based coaching for the remainder of the 12-month period, however they will be able to see their history and access activities in Ginger’s extensive self-care library.
  • The Ginger app is available on any iPhone, iPad or Android devices. Ginger is currently mobile only and cannot be accessed on desktop computers. Ginger is also available in Spanish language.

 

What services are available to members through Ginger? 

  • Text-based behavioral health coaching
    • Ginger behavioral health coaches offer day-to-day support for life’s challenges. Members can get immediate, real-time support via text with a trained behavioral health coach day or night, 365 days a year.
  • Skill-building activities
    • Personalized and clinically-validated exercises that help members manage stress, cope with loss, work through relationship issues, and more. The interactive content is accessible anytime in the app and supports the work done in coaching.
  • Check-ins and progress
    • Members can check-in about how they’ve been feeling and get a summary of results when done. This enables members and their coaching team to track progress over time and make any necessary adjustments to their care plan.

Product-Specific Details

  • Eligibility: Ginger is available to adult members in all regions. Ginger is not currently available to Medi-Cal members in California (approval pending).
  • Subscription: KP is offering a 90-day subscription to text-based coaching with Ginger. The subscription timeline begins when a member activates their account by clicking on a clearly marked link in the app. Eligible members get a 90-day subscription every 365 days. Once the subscription ends, members must wait 9 months to activate another 90-day subscription.
  • Registration: Members must go start the registration process at kp.org at either kp.org/coachingapps or on the dedicated Ginger page for their region (see list above).
  • Activation: Members activate their 90-day subscription after they complete registration, which enables the member to schedule a texting session with a coach, begin texting immediately with a coach, or explore self-care activities within the app.
  • Coaching session: Members can either schedule an appointment for a coaching session or chat right away 24/7/365. The sessions are text-based chat within the app. However, if members prefer speaking over typing, they can use the voice-to-text functionality on their Android or iPhone. Ginger’s in-app texting function is private and secure.
  • App Usage: Members can use the Ginger app and text-based coaching as often and as much as they want or need during the 90-day subscription.
